Bigger Teams need different leadership approaches
This article in the Harvard Business Review is a great practical example of the challenges posed by increasing team size and bigger teams. It not only impacts team leaders and requires them to change their leadership approach; it also impacts team members and their organisations. The consequences include over-collaboration, productivity loss, work stress and burn-out of individuals that have a key central role in the team, and the organisation generally.
This phenomena is explained by the exponential relationship between the increasing size of teams and the interaction volume between team members, and members of other teams as they deal with uncertainty, making sense of the world and sharing what they know.
